"A Feast for the Eyes"

THE CONSUMPTION OF FOOD CONTENT

It’s evident that Americans possess a voracious appetite for food, both in the kitchens and online seeing the consumption of food content.

It starts in the grocery store.

“We have never had greater diversity in our local grocery stores. There used to be, as late as the 1990s, 7,000 items in a grocery store, and now it’s 40,000 to 50,000,” writes Michael Ruhlman, author of “Grocery: The Buying and Selling of Food in America.”¹ This explosion of choices reflects an evolving palate and curiosity of today’s consumers, with supermarkets reaching $1 Trillion in sales in 2022, according to the Food Industry Association.

We can’t take our eyes off food.

While Julia Child helped to transform the dinner table for millions, her audience may have unknowingly been the first consumers of food content. That’s because today, the average adult now spends five hours each week watching, reading, browsing and tagging food on social media, but just four hours whipping up their own meals. Meanwhile, one in five admitted to making a dish at home but just so they can be photographed  and shared on social media.²

Why is food content so popular?
1. It’s part of our identity.

For many, food is like a family album filled with recipes, complete with tomato sauce smudges and olive oil stains. Each recipe is unique in flavor as well as  a tale of origin, often involving cherished memories of loved ones.

2. Eat is social

Eating not only nourishes our bodies, but our social connections as well. Luckily all this dining with family and friends  can all have a major impact on health and well-being according to the CDC. Of course, with the prevalence of social media, we tend to share not only photos of who we are dining  with, but what is beautifully displayed on the plate in front of us.

3. Food looks appetizing!

Our taste buds are not engaged when we are deciding what to eat. Because it is our eyes that  form expectations and build anticipation for what we order or choose to cook. Vibrant colors in artful arrangements, not only stimulate our senses, but receive a lot of 👍
